“To do good, you actually have to do something”

Some of those within my close circle of family, friends, and colleagues already know what this is about. For everyone else, here it goes:

I’m moving on from my role with GE Power to fully invest my time and energy into the startup I’ve founded.

It’s not an engineering startup. It’s not a tech startup. It’s not an independent consulting startup. It’s a completely different path.

Some context:

I lived overseas as a young boy, and my experiences living abroad made me passionate about travel and exploration. As I’ve traveled and explored over the years, I’ve witnessed the amazing world we have and the impact people just like you and I make on our environment.

As an engineer, I’ve been trained to solve problems. With my travels and at home, the more I looked around, the more I saw a growing problem. How we live today is, without a doubt, impacting the natural world around us...and it’s not for the better.

I’ve been inspired by a personal hero of mine, Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia, who said, ‘To do good you actually have to do something.’ It’s usually easier said than done, but I figured what better way to make a difference than with my own lifestyle? First, being an engineer (or “nerd” for non-engineers), I increased my understanding of everyday activities and their correlated negative environmental impacts.

Next, I analyzed what behaviors could be easily modified to create the greatest impact. In the end, I completed what I initially set out to do, live a more sustainable lifestyle. And then came the “ah-ha moment”. The real solution isn’t just a handful of individuals making the shift, it needs to be the new norm. So why not share the fruits of my labor with a step by step guide to a more sustainable lifestyle? With this vision, Sekoyia was created.

Why:

Through Sekoyia, I want to inspire individual action, empower daily changes in lifestyle, and build a community of impact to safeguard and sustain our natural world.

How:

Initially, through curated sets of products complimented with stories and evidence of environmental impact (both good and bad), and tailored reports on the impact your actions are making on the natural world around you.

What:

Through a monthly subscription box, Sekoyia offers alternatives to everyday products such as plastic wrap, resealable sandwich bags, water bottles, toothbrushes, soaps, and many more. Each box is crafted to address a specific aspect of your lifestyle like water usage, waste, energy, and hygiene. Within each box is an impact report which shows you not only how big a difference you can make with what might feel like small changes in your daily routine, but also the whole impact of everyone within the Sekoyia community together.

You can help.

I’d be honored and grateful if you would support this initiative. Simply visit the Sekoyia website and consider buying one box… just a single month. Together, our collective impact can make a lasting difference.
